WHAT TO DO TO KEEP OUR REPUBLIC

We live in what has variably been called "a democratic republic," or "a constitutional republic."

Most Americans believe that we are a democracy, but that is not true in the classical sense of the word.

At any rate, we have a voice in our government.

The government, however, often behaves as if it is deaf to our voice.

We proved our power, however, as the fed's first attempt at a bail-out (now called "the rescue plan") failed because of a blitz of phone calls, letters and emails against it.

So here is our hope: When a bill is sent to our law makers by soon to be President BO, if it is one that advances one of his socialistic ideas, we must inundate the Congressional switchboard with objections to it.

Our involvement is the most likely deterrent to a move toward socialism.

The only other hope is the Supreme Court, which could declare a particular proposal as unconstitutional, but that will depend upon whether or not BO has yet nominated, and has had confirmed, his cadre of liberal judges.

So get ready, stay informed and be VERY active in the process.

BO is already building a core of very liberal heads of departments for his cabinet, etc., so we will really have to be diligent.

As the Boy Scouts motto says: BE PREPARED!

That's not even remotely true.

The Republican Bail Out of the unregulated investment banking industry passed congress and was signed by the president. You are now $700 Billion dollars in debt thanks to President Bush's appointee's and cronies.

"The only other hope is the Supreme Court, which could declare a particular proposal as unconstitutional..."

Wouldn't that be the "legislating from the bench" that you hate so much? Judges over turning the will of the people?

"BO is already building a core of very liberal heads of departments for his cabinet, etc., so we will really have to be diligent."

He's appointed 1 guy. 1. Calm down.

xavier: You are so uninformed. The first try at a bail-out by Congress did indeed fail. Maybe you missed it, but it happened. The one that passed was the SECOND try which was an end run done by the Senate. It then went to the House of Representatives, which passed the Senate version...with a few very expensive earmarks.

You also missed that President Bush went to Congress and asked them to pass regulations on the industry, but they refused to do so.

BTW, the bail out was done by a Democratically controlled Senate and Congress, not by the President.

Yep. You're right about the Supreme Court. It is not the preferred way of getting this done. That is why I listed is as a last hope.

BO has publically named one man, who has accepted, but he has been in the process of building his core since before the election, and will continue to do so.

This is not a negative...every president-elect does it, 'cause it is necessary. It is not that he is doing it that is important, it is who he is negotiating with and choosing that is important to me.

I am perfectly calm. Thank you very much for caring about me so deeply.

Now try really hard to get your facts right before you go cutting down everything I say.

I don't make this stuff up.

I may be stupid, but I'm not dumb.

Like some people I know.

Very liberal?

He's thinking of Lawrence Summers for Treasury Secretary.

If you think Summers is liberal then you must live in an alternate universe.

ducky's here: I'm thinking of having a white Christmas here in Southwest Florida, too.

Thinking about it doesn't make it happen.

Check back when/if its a done deal.

Joe, Great post. I think you are on target...You know looking at both your post and Xavier's remarks. He is where the news media did their most effective work. He believed all that he read from them and that was where it ended..It is indeed sad that one has to read all news sources to get a complete picture on what is happening and the reasons for it. In the past one read the news, all of it then opinions were done by the Editorial Staff. That as with other things is long gone as is much that was good about this country......OB has pledged to Change this country. Change it how. people are still dying to get in here, after the change they might want to stay home. They get here and want to change it...Forget it......Change will come, but assimilation comes first, America first, then remember your roots.....I ramble....Agree Joe stay awake.....stay well

Joe, You're right. The first bill failed because the Dems wanted to reward ACORN with 20% of any profit that occurred with a sell-off of the properties they had initially told America they were going to buy. It failed and I wish the second had failed.

It took a majority of Democrats and a minority of weak-kneed Republicans to pass that bill through the back door.

I'd like to have seen a few of those Republicans go out the front door on election day, but we'll have to wait till 2010 to replace them with reform-minded Republicans who understand fiscal responsibility.

We will indeed need to be vigilant with the next four years. By the looks of things, we're getting ready to bail out a few more irresponsible folk who make their millions by firing common-folk and bankrupting companies.

If we want to keep our country free of government control, we're going to have to realize we are the bosses, not the servants. We need to keep talking about the direction of our country. So many folks seem to think that it runs itself into the ground by osmosis. Our apathy is what causes the mess we are in.

We have taken the example of a borrow-now-let-our children and grandchildren pay-later approach to governing our nation. People have borrowed themselves into this credit crisis, the housing crisis and the equity crisis. And all we did is follow the government's lead. They talked all the banks into sending out billions of credit-card apps with 0% interest. They helped businesses present the buy-now-and-do-not-pay for a year marketing plans. And folks who need medicine, clothing, vehicles and gas use the credit card to pay for it because they don't have enough money to survive with the inflation due to higher and higher fuel costs. But that's okay because the government borrows from China to pay Japan and from China to pay for our oil in the Middle East.

We are getting what we deserve economically. God has set standards to follow and we have ignored them. And if we are to fix this mess, it's gonna take more than bowing down to one idol or two in Washington, D.C.

I don't think you need to calm down, Joe. I think we need to rise up. And as McCain said, "Fight." selahV
