Bojangles Drakelet's here said, in a previous comment string,

".....Aquarius, the last time I encountered as useless a Sophist as yourself I was reading Aristophanes.

He thought they were pretty risible also......"

Au contraire, Bo, I am very much a useful Sophist. A sophist presents a specious argument specifically for deception. I craft my word salads to appear logical and I use obscure words and complicated sentence constructions in order to intimidate you, personally. I also like to manipulate your prejudices, emotions and your proclivity for mechanical response rather than thoughtful retort to my own ends.

Sophistry is a necessary and quite often entertaining method of making the Librul dance.

I'm a neophyte, though. Joe is the true journeyman.

You are right about the 'risible' bit as well - I knock 'em dead, I do!

Query?

When you read Aristophanes, which translation did you use? The Loeb Classical Library? Or was it the Marvel and DC illusitrated version? If the former, did you read it in its original Greek like I did when I lived in Cloud Cuckoo Land - aka Colombia?

If you use the word 'scumbags' in reference to Liberals I reckon it would pass muster.
If I am to be characterised as a contraceptive, I would prefer 'Dalkon Shield' as the not altogether malapropos pejorative cognominate - 'cause it was so deadly, like me.

sue hanes said...

Aquarina - I would think that 'scumbags' would be acceptable here on Joe's Really Cool Blog.

Just My Opinion.

Ah, Bill Witless again. Let's try to be more comprehensive, Joe.

1. Military --- Yes sir, having a massive military sure does make us exceptional. Bill Witless points out the Soviet oppression of Eastern Europe and says nothing about our history in Central and South America. Then we have our part in the horrific tragedy in Congo. A few million in Vietnam and the odd half million elsewhere.
Yeah we have been exceptional.

2. Economy --- Well, we have lost a lot of ground since PROGRESSIVES formulated the Marshal Plan. Now we're just a debt machine that generates a good part of our GDP by just moving the money around.
You'd be hard pressed to call it exceptional right now. What advantage we had after the war was pretty quickly pissed away.

3. Scientifically -- It would be foolish to deny our achievements and who would wish to. But do point out that progressive ideas like the state college system and its research capabilities have been important.
But there are limitations. Remember that next time you ride an American bullet train.

4. Culture -- That was embarrassing. The top 50 movie grosses pretty much proves we're the pinnacle. Yeah, Shrek is a regular "Rules of the Game". Twilight's right up there with "Seven Samurai".

Michael Jackson? Are you kidding me?
Proof we're exceptionally vapid maybe. Yeah, our cultural contribution is a drug addict who dies in her bath tub after being in the bargain bins for a decade but still dominates the news cycle.
Capitalism absolutely has to pitch to the least common denominator and that's what we do. Exceptional? Lindsay Lohan?

Seems that Bill Witless has been asleep for 3 decades.

But I'll tell you Joe, back in the day when all those crazy leftists were cutting loose we were a moving concern. Abstract expressionism, minimalism, modal jazz ... our literature was compelling. Of course as usual the American film industry was playing catch up but Bill Witless says it's exceptional.

Joe said...

Ducky: I think you should move to one of those countries you think is more exceptional than the U.S.

Send me the bill.

Really exceptional coutries, like really smart people, don't need to brag and remind the world of how exceptional and smart they are.

I never once read or heard Albert Einstein, for example, talk about his IQ. Likewise, exceptional countries should show their uniqueness by not committing the gross mistakes of past empires.

While I believe America's greatness lies in her Constitution--the oldest federal constitution in existence, at the same time we've made some horrendous mistakes that, if we were really so exceptional, never would have happened.

We're a country of people with strenghts and weaknesses like all peoples on the planet. What sets us apart is the Constitution. And we would be exceptional if we adhered to its principles.

Unfortunately the founding document was flawed, and we had to go through the bloodiest war in our history to right it. Then we had to wait until other countries beat us in allowing women the vote before we decided that was the exceptional thing to do.

Lots of countries have out-exceptioned us on basic human and civil rights, I'm afraid.

So going about tooting our horn on "exceptionalism" is a bit far fetched and embarrassing.

One is exceptional by example and doing the right thing FIRST.

We haven't always done so.

PS. Telling people to leave the US because they have realist's view of their country's exceptionalism is definitely NOT exceptional. It's what insecure people who cannot face their country's flaws say to people who can.

Joe said...

SK: You're exceptional. Exceptionally arrogant, ignorant and pedigogical.

Maybe you'd like to join Ducky.

Send me the bill.

You've not refuted one thing that I've written. You've only managed to call me names.

How unexceptional.

Ducky's here said...

Joe, going ad hominem when somebody offers reasoned refutation to your little Bill Witless video clip is not indicative of the 140 I.Q. you claim.

How do you measure national exceptionalism, Joe? As we are trying to indicate, it's complicated.

Now say I moved to New Zealand. Great place. Can I send you the bill?

But not to worry, I like Boston. Great arts scene, sports, friends and family are here and I know how to drive here.

Joe - Some days I just plain am close to nuts. Everybody knows that.

And today is no exception.

I honestly did not mean to say that Bill Whittle's name was Twitter - I just am having a bad day.

So I stand corrected.

and my apologies to Bill Whittle - and to you Joe - the Blog Administrator of this Really Cool Blog.

G'night.

Ducky, nice to meet a fellow Bostonian. I live in the city and love it. I don't have a car here. I'm an avid public transportation user and walker. Boston is a great walking city.

Cheers.

More proff that liberals can't read. They read what they want to read, regardless of what is really written.

I have never claimed to have a 140 I.Q.

It is technically true you never wrote that your IQ is 140. But you did write that your IQ has been tested many times over the years, and it is OVER 140.

To now pick apart someone's claim that your IQ is 140 and that you never said it was is a classic example of pettifoggery.

And since your IQ is, as you claim, in the "moderately gifted" range, I'm sure you know, without looking it up, what pettifoggery is.

Joe said...

SK: "It is technically true you never wrote that your IQ is 140."

Ducky said: "...not indicative of the 140 I.Q. you claim."

I did not claim, nor do I now claim, an I.Q. of 140.

You read like a liberal, just like Ducky.

You two should get together. You'd make a great pair.

Pettifoggery is arguing over small points.

But that's no small point.

You have ascribed to me as fact something that is not fact.

That makes it untrue; ie: a lie.

One who farms is a farmer. One who lies is a liar.

It is a lie that I claimed an I.Q. of 140.

I was wrong once last year.
