OUT-AND-OUT LIE OR OUT-AND-OUT IGNORANCE?

On the July 25th edition of Meet the Press, Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner, said:

"[The president has] proposed to freeze discretionary spending, to keep the overall size of the government at a very modest level as a share of our economy. If you look again at what the president’s proposing, he keeps the overall size of government at a very modest level comparable to–lower than what was in the Bush administration, comparable to what President Reagan presided over. That’s very important."

As the following chart shows, that is untrue.

So did Geithner commit an out-and-out lie, or is he just a guy in charge of numbers who knows not about numbers?

On this chart, the Clinton and Early GW Bush years were the lowest spending as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product.

The last Bush year and President BO's first two years have been a disaster.

What would motivate Geithner to lie about something so easily checked?

HOW'S THAT HOPE AND CHANGE WORKING OUT FOR YOU?

President BO was the poster child for “hope and change” during his run-up to the presidency.

He is fond of telling us that he “inherited” this financial malaise in which we find ourselves.

He and his administration have told us many times that they did not know it was as bad as it was, and that’s why it is so hard to get us out of it.

But I thought President BO was the smartest person in three universes.

If he’s so smart, how come he didn’t know how bad things were?

A smart person would have known that, no?

Well, for the sake of this post (and this post only) let’s just say that he was right. Let’s assume that all of our problems originated with George Bush and his policies…let’s just pretend, shall we?

If I understand correctly then, George Bush gave us a huge national debt.

President BO’s fix begins with giving us even MORE national debt…right?

If I understand correctly then, George Bush gave us higher taxes (especially after his cuts run out).

President BO’s fix begins with upcoming higher taxes even on those earning less than $250,000.00 per year (which he promised not to do)…right?

If I understand correctly then, George Bush gave us more people on welfare than ever in history.

President BO’s fix is to increase the welfare rolls to an even higher level…right?

If I understand correctly then, George Bush gave us too much, but not enough, government regulation.

President BO’s fix is to regulate everything possible…right?

If I understand correctly then, George Bush gave us the Gulf oil spill.

President BO’s fix is to drag feet, talk a lot, huff and puff and actually do nothing to fix it…right?

If I understand correctly then, George Bush gave us too much government.

President BO’s fix is to make government larger and larger still…right?

If I understand correctly then, George Bush gave us wasteful spending.

President BO’s response is to increase wasteful spending…right?

If I understand correctly then, George Bush gave us government corruption.

President BO’s fix is to find as many corrupt administration members as possible to increase government corruption to un-holy levels…right?

If I understand correctly then, George Bush gave us TARP.

President BO’s fix is to bring us TARP II and TARP III…right?

As I understand it, before becoming president, George Bush spent six years gaining governmental experience as governor of Texas.
President BO was a community organizer in Illinois and served fewer than 80 days as a senator before becoming president…right?

If I understand correctly then, President BO is the most unqualified, unprepared, sophomoric, amateurish person we have EVER had in the White House…right?

So, how IS all that hope and change working out for you?

(See, I LOVED that last one, because it will infuriate liberals, who will cry, "RACIST!" because they cannot understand what it is really about...I promise...they CANNOT (that is: they are unable) understand its point. It's not in them. These self-described broad-minded people have extreme tunnel-vision.

CONTRAST AND COMPARE

A frequent visitor and commenter to this blog, Hip Suburban White Guy, whose blog I do not necessarily recommend (but do as you wish), gave the following list of items from the Preamble to the Constitution to use as castigation of right wingers:

1: "...in Order to form a more perfect Union..."

2: "...establish Justice..."

3: "...insure domestic Tranquility..."

4: "...provide for the common defence..."

5: "...promote the general Welfare..."

6: "...secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity..."

That's actually pretty funny, 'cause every conservative I have ever met believes those to be the principle functions of government.

Liberals say they do, too.

But they seem to mean different things to liberals from what they mean to conservatives.

Here's what I mean.

1. "...in order to form a more perfect union..."

Liberal: Move the nation toward some imagined state of Utopia.

Conservative: Do what is necessary to keep us united.

2. "...establish justice..."

Liberal: Treat those who agree with you equally under the law...just not Christians, conservatives or certain other groups.

Conservative: Put in place a system that seek to treat everybody fairly, regardless of race, religion or creed.

3. "...insure domestic tranquility..."

Liberal: Hold peace marches, get wild and angry, throw stuff, leave the place filthy so the county clean-up crews will have plenty to do. Call anybody who disagrees with you vile, vulgar names and demonstrate your IQ by extending the appropriate finger at them.

Conservative: Do what is appropriate to actually keep the peace in our cities. If you hold a Tea Party gathering, for instance, leave the grounds cleaner than when you found them. Behave civilly toward one another. (Check videos of both "Peace demonstrations" and "Tea Party" gatherings).

4. "...provide for the common defense..."

Liberal: Go to war with no clear understanding of what it means to win, and make no effort to actually win the war. Seek imagined reconciliation with the enemy.

Conservative: Win wars, as in WWII and Gulf War I. Don't get into them unless you have to, but if you do, get in to win.

5. "...promote the general welfare..."

Liberal: Take money in the form of taxes from those who work hard to earn it and distribute it to those who need it (a good thing) AND to those who refuse to work due to laziness or lack of education.

Conservative: Take only as much money in taxes as is absolutely necessary to accomplish the six charges to government. No more.

6. "...secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and to our posterity..."

Liberal: Regulate, confiscate and control every possible aspect of society, believing that regulation equals freedom and is good for us and for our children.

Conservative: Fight to the death to preserve responsible freedom for every man, woman and child now and in the centuries to come.

I'm not certain how we go about reconciling these differences so that number one above is accomplished, but if we don't, we will lose the values, the accomplishments and the very nature of this great country.

That would make me sad...how about you?

EQUAL WITH LIFE, LIBERTY, HAPPINESS, AND JUSTICE FOR ALL

I was over at Political Pistachio where the subject was the racial idiocy perpetrated by the left over the comments of Shirley Sherrod.

Something blogger, Douglas V. Gibbs wrote attracted my attention.

He wrote: "True freedom is having opportunity to go for it. And if you fail, you pull yourself up and go for it again."

That's the essence of America, and her greatness over the years.

Opportunity.

Every person in America has the opportunity to be or do whatever he or she wants to be or do if, and only if, he or she is willing to do what it takes to achieve whatever it is he or she wants to do.

Our liberal "friend," XO, commented: "I believe that people who cling to the ridiculous idea that there is a huge population of lazy, unambitious (possibly in the coutry illegaly) people whose only goal is to sit around benefitting from the hard work of others are delusional."

Well, he's wrong. (Notwithstanding that his spelling lacks some polishing...that was a cut-and-paste).

I went to grammar school on the U.S. Army base at Fountainbleau, France, where my father was stationed at the time.

Our school was integrated...long before schools in the USA were. (This was in the early 50s).

We had "African-Americans," Asians, Hispanics, Christians, Jews, kids of enlisted personnel and officers' kids all in the same classrooms...we simply didn't know any different.

When the teacher taught us that the square root of 16 is 4, every child in the room had the exact same opportunity to learn that truth...every one.

Some chose not to learn, but most learned the lesson well.

All of them went on to high school, some graduated, some did not. It was their choice to study or not to study that made the difference.

But every one of them had the opportunity to study, learn and graduate. Every one.

Some then went on to get jobs, some low paying, some high paying. Others chose not to work, but went on to avail themselves of the "public dole."

There were some who went on to college, some who went directly into the work force and some who did neither.

Some contributed to the advancement of society while others leeched off of it.

Stand around at a parking lot at the local U-Save supermarket located in a poor area of town, pay attention to the people around you and see how many can't formulate a coherent sentence, check the price of their groceries or find something productive to do that day.

I submit that XO is dead wrong. He seems to think that of those who are on the "public dole," are all there because they have "lost life's lottery" and did not have the same opportunities that others had.

That's wrong.

Except for the disabled, mentally and/or physically, there is no excuse for a person in the U.S. to be without adequate food, shelter and clothing on the strength of their own merit and willingness to apply themselves.

Is there racism making it difficult for some?

Yep.

But Oprah, for instance, overcame racism. She worked through it and made a success of herself. (Those exploited by Maury Povich, on the other hand, represent the dregs of society; always fighting, bringing each other down and otherwise demonstrating the wrong way to go about life).

Oprah took advantage of the opportunities offered her by America. Good for her.

She was not the winner of life's lottery, she worked hard, pushed ahead with her dream and made it to the top.

I don't like much of what Oprah stands for, but I am thrilled that she demonstrates beyond a shadow of a doubt that anybody who wants to can make it big in America.

I'm also thrilled by the achievements of Clarence Thomas, Thomas Sowell, Condoleezza Rice, and other "African-Americans" who have worked through the system to succeed.

When liberals like XO try to convince us that the majority of people receiving benefits from the government are helpless to help themselves, they are displaying a form of ignorance from which there is no escape, and which forms the foundation of what will be the demise of America.

We should be structuring our society such that opportunities to better oneself improve, through education and hard work, not providing opportunities for people to become dependent on the government for their sustenance.

I agree with XO that we are the greatest country on earth. I do not agree that our greatness is measured in any way by whether we work in order to provide others with "free government induced health care," etc.

We are great because we provide opportunity for anybody, even those on welfare, who are able, to get off of welfare and learn to feel good about themselves because they have become educated and willing to work hard to succeed.

We need to teach them how to do that so they, too, can taste of the American Dream.

The American dream is not a house for every American, it is the opportunity to work hard to afford a house, if a house is what you want.

We are a land of life, liberty, the persuit of happiness, justice for all and, most of all, opportunity.

DO YOU BELIEVE?

Do you believe that if you pass enough of the right kinds of laws you can lead poor people to become prosperous?

Do you believe that if you take enough money away from wealthy people, the poor people of the country will be better off?

Do you believe that if you work hard for what you have, some of it should be taken away and given to those who will not work as hard as you do?

Do you believe that when you go to work in the morning you go to work not just for you and your family but for the other families on the planet, too?

Do you believe that the government engages in the kind of productivity that adds to the gross national product?

Do you believe that the government has money of its own that it has earned and therefore can do with as it wishes?

Do you believe that the government can give any money to anybody without first taking it away from someone else?

Do you believe that a country can multiply its wealth by dividing that wealth among the people?

Do you believe that people who think they do not have to work because someone else will take care of them are productive members of society?

Do you believe that when people get the idea that what they work for will be arbitrarily taken away they have incentive to work harder?

Do you believe that there is a point at which those who work, when they see so much of their lawful gain taken from them, will somehow not give up and stop working so hard?

Do you believe that there is some definable limit on how much an individual should be allowed to lawfully and ehtically earn? (Who should determine and set that limit?)

Do you believe that if enough wealth was stripped from corporations there would be more jobs for everyone?

Do you believe that you would be reading this on your PC or MAC if Bill Gates and Steve Jobs had been restricted in how much they could make creating, selling and profiting from the industry they had so much to do with developing?

Do you believe you would have: an iPhone; iPad; smart-phone; 5-gig, Intel dual core computer with 2 gigs of memory, if silicone valley had been restricted in what they could make by developing same?

Do you believe that people who make their living pretending to be someone they are not (actors) are just as "productive" as a steel worker in Pennsylvania or an automobile manufacturer in Detroit?

If you believe those things, you are a liberal.

Implementing those beliefs will destroy America, and ultimately will take you down with her.

BECAUSE I SAID IT, IT'S SO

Did President BO say that Republicans “are advancing a misguided notion that emergency relief somehow discourages people from looking for a job should talk to these folks.”

And did he continue “That attitude, I think, reflects a lack of faith in the American people.”

Answer: Yes. He said both of those things and was shown saying them on national TV.

Did he utter the truth?

Answer: No, he did not.

Republicans never once indicated that they did not want an extension to the unemployment benefit...not one time!

What they DID say was that they wanted to make certain that the extension would be paid for from EXISTING funds, not by extending the debt or deficit.

Now, did President BO really believe he was telling the truth, or did he know that his statement was inaccurate?

Answer: IF he is as smart as people say he is, he HAD to know he was making misleading or untrue statements.

If he did not know he was making misleading or untrue statements, then he can't possibly be as smart as he's been given credit for being.

MAJOR PC EMERGENCY

I am presently on my wife's computer, as mine just spontaneously shut down. Turned itself off! Just quit!

Reset the power pack, pushed the on/off button, got a brief light and then nothing.

Tried a bunch of different approaches...nothing.

Will return to blogging as soon as I can figure out what's going on.

Can't use wife's computer much 'cause she's on it so much.

Will have to write when she's off galavanting around.

KRITIQUE'S KORNER

I cut my literary teeth on science fiction: Isaac Asimov; Ray Bradbury; Lewis Padget; and so many other quality writers.

I know good science fiction and science drama when I see it.

I watched a lot of Star Trek, even though I didn't really consider it science fiction...more like space oriented soap opera. But it had its cute moments.

Enter The Jensen Project, an NBC Friday night movie.

There are some fine actors represented here: LeVar Burton, of Roots and Star Trek fame; Patricia Richardson, of Home Improvement fame; as well as an assortment of actors I've never heard of, all of whom need to hang on to whatever their day jobs are.

The Moller International Sky Car was featured in a scene that looked like it was patterned after a Jetson cartoon. It swooshed in over the city in a way that looked like something drawn for a 1960s era feature cartoon.

If you discount the fact that the movie was written on a third grade level, with lines stolen from every "coming of age" family-style movie ever produced; the lines were read like it was the first time any of the actors had seen them; the flow was choppy and disorganized; the plot old and tired; the sequences unrealistic (a teen aged girl hero knocks down a 300 pound goon on a stairway); the timing of the events contrived; the continuity dismal and that it was rife with electronic gizmos that looked fakier than the monster in a Godzilla movie; it was a fine made for TV flick.

If you discount all of those things.

The Jensen Project was produced by NBC by means of Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) and Procter and Gamble (NYSE: PG).

Wal-Mart and Procter and Gamble should stick to retailing.

NBC should find something it knows how to do.

TV definitely ain't it.

HARVARD MATH

I know. I know. He's brilliant. The smartest man to come down the pike in almost our entire history.

He is President Barack Obama, or as I like to call him: President BO; President, out of respect for the office; BO because his policies stink.

He pleases his constituents in absolutely everything he does, even when they don't like what he does.

HIV/AIDS activists really love him. They know he is working hard to help those living with HIV/AIDS in America and abroad.

The fact that there is no new federal money in his HIV/AIDS strategy does not deter them. They are content to know that he has redirected HIV/AIDS money in the budget to spend it more efficiently.

President BO has acknowledged that these are challenging times for Americans living with HIV/AIDS because the economy is forcing states to cut back on assistance for drugs.

“I know the need is great,” he said. “And that’s why we’ve increased federal assistance each year that I’ve been in office, providing an emergency supplement this year to help people get the drugs they need, even as we pursue a national strategy that focuses on three central goals.”

Don't you just love the math? "Each year that I've been in office."

And how many is that?

OK, OK. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he was speaking of calendar years.

That would be 2009 and 2010.

Two different years on the calendar...get it?

So his statement is true, right? Because he always tells the truth. You can trust him. You can believe what he says about EVERYTHING.

Only in 2009 he only increased HIV/AIDS budget allocations just a little bit, with which the afore mentioned advocates were disappointed.

This year, President BO has increased those budget numbers not one iota.

Some of you will miss the point here and will go off on some diatribe about the government's role in supporting HIV/AIDS research and all.

The point is the reckless way in which President BO plays with truth and numbers, either out of ignorance or on purpose.

Since we know he is the smartest president since Buchannan, we know it's not ignorance.

The only things left are: he is deliberately lying or he has convinced himself that same=more.

He actually has fallen prey to that liberal mind-set that believes something is true because you wish it to be true or that it is true because you said it, regardless of whether it is actually true.

Quite aside from the arrogance of his statement, it is clear that at Harvard Law School they teach some pretty fuzzy math.

Is there anybody who does not know that we’re in a bad economy?
People are out of work. Unemployment is at 9.5%.

What money the average American has, he is afraid to spend lest he go deeper into the doldrums of unfathomable debt.

So, what is the government’s idea of how to fix that problem?

Take more of their money away from them in the form of taxes.

That will make them feel much more secure.

Oh, wait! The plan is to take it from the rich and give it to the poor. A sort of “Robin Hood” mentality, or at least that’s what they want you to think.

The last time I checked, every boss, company and/or corporation I have ever worked for was richer than me. If they hadn’t been, they would not have been able to pay me.

Seems to me that if we over-level the proverbial playing field, my boss won’t be able to pay me any more.

‘Course if they take enough from him and give enough to me, I won’t need a job and can happily join the ranks of the unemployed, no harm – no foul.

A better idea comes from Bill Whittle at Vodkapundit: Establish a 5-year moratorium on new taxes and a 5-year extension of current tax rates.

That way, businesses could know what their 5-year future holds, in terms of their corporate taxes and make secure, definite plans for that future.

Do you remember that presidential candidate Barack Obama promised a net spending cut by the government?

Did that happen, or did it not?

Answer: It did not.

And it will not as long as these tax-and-spend, anti-traditional Americans are still in office.

The government’s idea of how to get us out of this mess is to double their spending, take over and/or regulate every corporate entity in America and spread the wealth around. They have now admitted to that goal.

So, where are they going to get the money?
From you and from me.

“No, no!” you shout. “They will only take it from the rich!”

Uh…that’s what they said in the beginning. Do you remember the “under $250,000.00” promise?

That’s gone by the wayside. They’re coming after you.

The eventual aim is to take 100% of what you “earn” and spread it around based on their assessment of the value of your contribution to society.

See, President BO considers what you earn to belong to the people.

“No, no, Joe! That will never happen!”

Well when it does, and you end up with only what the government says you can have as you are relegated to back-breaking work in the government rice paddies, please allow me to be first in line with, “I told you so!”

I AM AMERICA by Krista Branch

She is an American Idol "reject," mother of three, wife of a Baptist children's pastor and a fine performer.

I first heard the audio of this song on Glen Beck's program yesterday, and immediately loved it.

Her name is Krista Branch, and the song was written by her husband, Mike.

Some have wondered about the production of this song, whether it has been electronically enhanced to cover some imagined deficit in Krista's vocal talent, or what-not.

Certainly no more than 97.6745% of ALL music videos in existence, your favorite artist included.

The important thing here, though, is the message and how clearly and professionally it is presented.

I was raised on and schooled in the operatic style of classical singing, and for many years believed that it was the only valid style of music in the universe.

In my late thirties I discovered that I had been stricken with a form of musical snobbery that exceeded all reason.

As I began to spread my musical wings, I learned that the major purpose of music is self-expression, and discovered the intrinsic value of jazz, rock, pop, (disco...well....), rap, soul, southern gospel, and many other forms of music.

I learned to love Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, Lena Horne, the Cathedrals, the Gaithers, George Burns, Arthur Godfrey, Johnny Cash, the eclectic of eclectics: the Boston Pops and hundreds of others...very liberating!

(BTW: Electronic enhancement is now a part of musical expression, if not an indication of raw talent.)

This particular song is a powerful statement of the need to turn this ocean liner sized nation back toward its unifying roots using the political canoe paddle we have been given as a rudder.

SOME OUTRAGES ARE TOO OUTRAGEOUS TO ONLY BE CALLED OUTRAGEOUS

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden says that President BO has told him that it is his mission to reach out Muslim nations and make them feel good about their historic contribution to science and engineering.

In this, President BO's mandate is an absolute outrage.

This man you liberals elected is so sophomoric as to be unable to separate the purposes of one agency from another.

Being the one to want to teach new things, I provide here a list of the scientific and engineering innovations and inventions of the Muslim nations over the last 100 years:

INDEPENDENCE FROM WHAT AND WHY?

Do you know why we celebrate the 4th of July?

Many people have forgotten that "4th of July" is just a date. The real name of the holiday is "Independence Day."

So, from what did we declare our independence?

Have you ever actually read The Declaration of Independence?

Most of us know snippits of it; you know: "We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

But what ws so bad about being under British rule?

Here's the text of The Declaration. Pay particular attention to the list of greviences the framers had against the king.

IN CONGRESS, JULY 4, 1776

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefit of Trial by Jury:

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation, and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & Perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. — And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.
