FIREARMS REFRESHER COURSE

I don't own a firearm.

Lately, I have been seriously considering acquiring one or more.

For one thing, I live in the crime capital of Lee County, Florida.

For another, I am getting the distinct feeling that if I don't go ahead and get one, there will soon be a day when I cannot, the Constitution notwithstanding.

I received this email that makes some salient points about gun ownership and/or use:

1. "Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not." ~Thomas Jefferson
2. Those who trade liberty for security have neither.
~John Adams

3. Free men do not ask permission to bear arms.

4. An armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject.

5. Only a government that is afraid of its citizens tries to control them.

6. Gun control is not about guns; it's about control.

7. You only have the rights you are willing to fight for.

8. Know guns, know peace, know safety. No guns, no peace, no safety.

9. You don't shoot to kill; you shoot to stay alive.

10. Assault is a behavior, not a device.

11. 64,999,987 firearms owners killed no one yesterday.

12. The United States Constitution (c) 1791. All Rights Reserved.

13. The Second Amendment is in place in case the politicians ignore the others.

14. What part of 'shall not be infringed' do you NOT understand?

15. Guns have only two enemies; rust and politicians.

16. When you remove the people's right to bear arms, you create slaves.

17. The American Revolution would never have happened with gun control.

We're thinking of getting one, too. I never thought I would and Mr. Z REALLY never thought he would...he was a gun control guy...NOT ANYMORE.

If you get one, you'd better stock up on ammo IF you can find any, from what I hear. Very thoughtful post, JOe..thanks.

Interestingly enough, the number of gun owners with concealed carry permits has doubled in Virginia since Obama was elected. It now stands at over 202,000.

Florida has some goofy gun laws, but if you're going to keep a gun in your home, you don't need a permit.

You can find some interesting stories about gun owners foiling criminals here.

Here
is a collection of stories from the NRA database going back to 1959.

There is no doubt that an armed citizenry deters criminal activity, which is one of the reasons there are so many politicians are for gun control.

I have been trained to move silently. I have a gun. I have an explosives permit. I have a special effects licenses. I have extensive chemistry training. You would be amazed at how well these combine when the need arises.

The government can only take my gun.

Be well armed. Don't just have a gun.

An attempt at gun seizure is what started the Revolution. I hope Obama understands the answer that was given at Concorde.

Joe, et. al., we have a hand gun, & are thinking of getting another one (kids are older now). We have hunting guns, too, BB guns.

My Dad hunted, had a hand gun, 2 brothers hunted also. I knew how to load & fire all of their guns before I was out of high school. Handling a gun does not frighten me, b/c I've had practice & am confident w/ them.

If you get one, get training on how to use yours, & practice. My oldest brother (retired Coast Guard & lifetime NRA mbr) says that guns are only dangerous (in the hands of regular citizens) when they are owned by people who don't know how to use/handle them properly.

Get familiar, get safe, get confident. Have a gun if you like. It's your right.

I agree. BTW, did you hear lately that Congress is trying to pass a law that would require to have our guns registered on our IRS forms? Not sure if it is true.

Also, I was told once I moved to South Carolina that I wasn't a good homeowner unless I owned a gun. I quickly complied. :)
