Go Ahead! Defend This, If You Can

Imagine having to do 10 or 20 problems like this for homework! Sounds real educational to me.

I used to have to do 100 problems in an evening the old way...but that's just me.

AND HERE ARE SOME MORE PUBLIC SCHOOL GENIUSES:

Gives you confidence about our future, doesn't it?

The little girl seems to genuinely enjoy the math problem.
She has a good grasp of addition.

What's your beef, Joe?
My guess is that as a fundamentalist you can't tolerate anything outside your norm or actually believe there is only one proper addition algorithm.

Common Core standards make no mention of mandating the "Investigations" method for teaching math concepts.

Nice try, Joe.

As for the other video, I could walk down the street with a microphone and camera and single out people your age, ask the same questions and get the same percentage of stupid answers.

Joe - The math the little girl did drove me crazy.

The kids that were asked the questions looked to be old enough to get the right answers.

I will have to admit though - I didn't think of United States as a country beginning with 'U'. I guess I was thinking that the answer should be a country other than the U.S. Oh well.

Ducky: "The little girl seems to genuinely enjoy the math problem."

Enjoyment=accomplishment? The process is convoluted and unnecessarily complex. Math just isn't that hard.

XO: "... single out people your age, ask the same questions and get the same percentage of stupid answers."

Possibly. I'd consider them ignorant, too.

sh: "The math the little girl did drove me crazy."

Me,too.

Ducky: BTW,is that the way YOU would have solved the problem? Can you show me the principle of the process?

Look Baptist, the question is not which algorithm is used but understanding number theory.

I wouldn't care if she learned the Russian peasant algorithm so long as she learned.

Ducky: "Baptist" was me. We took a direct hit by lightning last night. The roof is messed up and so was our Internet. I think we got it straightened out.

FBCLA was a login I used many years ago. Somehow it snuck in while we were getting the Internet back up and running.
