"Slavery among the
whites was an improvement over independence in Africa. The very progress that
the blacks have made, when--and only when--brought into contact with the
whites, ought to be a sufficient argument in support of white supremacy--it
ought to be sufficient to convince even the blacks themselves."

"These Negroes,
they're getting pretty uppity these days and that's a problem for us since
they've got something now they never had before, the political pull to back up
their uppityness. Now we've got to do something about this, we've got to give
them a little something, just enough to quiet them down, not enough to make a
difference. For if we don't move at all, then their allies will line up against
us and there'll be no way of stopping them, we'll lose the filibuster and
there'll be no way of putting a brake on all sorts of wild legislation. It'll
be Reconstruction all over again."

I'm so proud of you Joe! You managed to learn how to use "the google" to find ancient, irrelevant stuff from the 19th and 20th century archives and "cut and paste" it (almost to the point of plagiarism)into a blog post that pretends to have a point! You are doing so good!
Slow news day, Joe?
How about something on the Black Mass to be held at Harvard? I figured that would tickle you.
Joe, all you've done is show everyone how endemic racism is in American culture.
Some of us already were aware of it, but thanks for proving that in the 21st century, the plague of racism still infects our country.
XO:, Ducky & SK: Well, just as I thought. You ignored the point and jumped right to the lame babble.
In your opinions, only the Republicans' past matters. Democrats are given a pass because racism is their favorite past-time. Always has been, as the quotes show. Is today, too.
Joe - I'm much more concerened with what the Republicans are trying to do TODAY than anything either party did 100 years ago.
XO: Republicans are trying to quash racism. Democrats are intent on perpetuating it.
They deny it, but their actions speak so loudly their words are hard to hear.
Joe - Republicans are so racist there is actually a website called "republicansareracist.com" with many fine examples.
"REKNOWNED RACIST DONALD STERLING IS ACTUALLY A REPUBLICAN"
"TEXAS REPUBLICAN SENATE CANDIDATE URGES BORDER RESIDENTS TO SHOOT ‘WETBACKS’ ON SIGHT"
"CONSERVATIVE HERO AND WELFARE QUEEN CLIVEN BUNDY SPEAKS OUT ON RACE"
"THE AVERAGE IQ OF IMMIGRANTS IN THE UNITED STATES IS SUBSTANTIALLY LOWER THAN THAT OF THE WHITE NATIVE POPULATION"

Joe, your post does not take into account that the GOP became progressive under TR and has left that legacy behind, even branding him a RINO.
The GOP more closely resembles the old Dems and the current iteration of the Dems is more like the old GOP.
However, speaking of progressives and conservatives, you would see that the quotes you cited came from the conservatives of their day, not the progressives.
DM: Parts of the Republican Party HAVE become progressive. All the time the left has become socialistic, fascist and communistic.
Thankfully, there are still parts of the Republican Party that really do try to reduce racism. That is not so with the Democrat Party.
Joe... to say that parts of the GOP have become progressive, proves my point. Your statement has to mean that at one time they were not progressive.
From history, we know for a fact that during the time of TR, they were progressive. For them to become progressive, they must have left that school of thought behind somewhere along the road.
Let us remember again, that many in the extreme wing of the GOP/Conservative group consider the progressive TR a RINO.
Aside from that, what parts of the Republican party have become progressive? Who are those folks?
DM: "For them to become progressive, they must have left that school of thought behind somewhere along the road."
You are absolutely correct! Far too many Republicans have adopted progressive ideology. That is what the Tea Party is fighting. We want to return to a less "progressive" (ideologically) government.
