Do you remember back in 1987 when that offensive picture of
the crucifix was put on display? It depicted a small plastic crucifix submerged in a glass of the “artist” Andres
Serrano's urine. It was all part of an exhibit sponsored by the National Endowment
for the Arts, a government agency that offers support and funding for artistic
projects, without controlling content.
Do you also remember the attacks and killings by Christians
that followed? Do you remember the gun shots ringing out? Do you remember the
police firing on the Christian attackers?
WOW! It was almost like Sunday night’s shooting in Garland,
Texas. The cartoon drawings of Muhammad at a “Draw Muhammad” contest were
offensive to Muslims.
And do you remember all of the other offenses committed against Christians and the violent response from Christians?
Following the Christian lead, shooters attacked the “Draw Muhammad”
contest in Garland. One of
the suspected shooters was in contact with an Islamic State recruiter who
seemingly urged him to take action against organizers of the controversial event.
Two men
in body armor, toting assault rifles and showing every willingness to open fire
now and count their victims later staged the attack. A security officer -- a
traffic officer by day -- with a pistol shot and killed both attackers. He
prevented what could have been another tragedy.

WAIT! I JUST REALIZED SOMETHING! NOBODY IN THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY ATTACKED
AND/OR KILLED ANYONE IN RESPONSE TO THE OFFENSIVE PICTURE OF THE CRUCIFIX IN

there be a difference in how Christians respond to offenses as compared to the
way Muslims respond?

The exhibit was sponsored by the Winston Salem Arts Center, a well known and respected organization. It was a judged exhibit and the award was supplied by several corporations and foundations including the NEA.
Part of the award was a one man show. serrano was awarded first prize but Piss Christ was NOT entered in competition.
It was part of his one man show so it was not financed by the NEA in any way.
Get it straight for once.
Were there attacks on galleries that displayed the work? Yes, go research it.
Now, this is less serious than the Texas attack. We are going to have a problem with pathological native born converts just as they have in Europe.
Just thought for once in your life you'd like to be a little less self satisfied and learn the facts.

The point is that you implied that the NEA sponsored the exhibit of Piss Christ.
This allowed ignorant people like yourself to be played by truly disgusting politicians such as Dick Armey and Jesse Helms to cut back arts funding. We certainly shouldn't have oral history projects or summer Shakespeare in our neighborhoods.
The point is that you are ignorant on this issue and lso on the acts of violence relating to the exhibit of Serrano's work.
Christians didn't respond with extreme violence true but they had other ways to suppress it.
No reason to be self satisifed and consider yourself above the fray.

For the sake of argument, let's say that the event was not "sponsored" by NEA. That still does not make Christians' response to offenses as dire as Muslims' response.
BTW: In 1987 the American photographer Andres Serrano made a formally sublime, politically charged work titled “Piss Christ” (detail above, in full below), by submerging a 13-inch plastic and wood crucifix into a jar of his own urine and photographing it. The work, by far the most famous in his “Immersions” series, made its debut at New York’s Stux Gallery to little fanfare, and then went on tour as part of the show “Awards in the Visual Arts 7,” a 10-person show for which each artist received a $15,000 fellowship from Winston-Salem’s Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) and was invited to pick her or his works for inclusion. The exhibition traveled to LACMA and the Carnegie-Mellon University Art Gallery without incident, before going on view at Richmond’s Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
In fact it wasn’t until two months after “Awards in the Visual Arts 7″ had left Richmond that the first public complaint about “Piss Christ” emerged. On March 19, 1989.

I take issue with Fred's comment about "radical Islamists." ALL Muslims -- real Muslims who actually follow their holy book -- are "radical." It is a religion founded on violence and sexual abuse, and always has been a religion of violence and sexual abuse. Always will be.
